For as long as I can remember, I have used the term "candied yams" to refer to the sugary, syrupy, orange, starchy goodness that graced the southern soul food table. I often used the terms "yams" and "sweet potatoes" interchangeably. However, I was yesterday years old (12/14/20) when I learned better. According to #MississippiState (see below), yams and sweet potatoes are NOT created equal. One of my facebook friends (@Kharyssa Brown), stated the difference quite succinctly, "yams are white...sweet potatoes are orange." So friends, now that I know better, I will endeavor to do better...because there is a difference (y'all stop calling sweet potatoes candied yams!!!)
Many of us are familiar with the applications of the sweet potato. However, I think the yam's applications are perhaps less known. According to one of my followers on Instagram (@chaoticeleganze), yams are cooked in a variety of ways. They can be fried (for breakfast with "egg sauce", made into a porridge, eaten with vegetables, boiled and eaten with "spicy red tomato sauce", or as a soup! Thanks to @chaoticeleganze for enlightening us!!!
Until we meet again...Y'all be good!!! ~Ms. Daryl
